Kerang Township

Kerang is a rural town of approximately 4,000 people set in northern Victoria between Echuca and Swan Hill at the junction of the Loddon and Murray Valley Highways. It is situated on the Loddon River, 27km from the Murray. Its economy is based on agriculture, with dairy, cattle, sheep, tomato and a variety of cropping occurring in the district as well as some citrus and grape growing. A rainfall of approx. 14 inches ( 350mm ) is largely supported by extensive irrigation. It is part of the Shire of Gannawarra. Kerang is the gateway to a chain of lakes, swamps and streams which are inviting attractions to tourists, sportsmen and naturalists. There are approx. 57 recognised lakes and swamps in the vicinity. The Ibis Rookeries are known as the "eighth wonder of the world" boasting a population of over 250,000. There are three varieties in the district and a "hide" has been erected for easy viewing by the public. More than 350 bird species have been identified in the Kerang area including many rare international wading birds. The town was first settled in 1849 approx 5 Km's south of the existing township which was established 8 years later.
